Bb Learn Tests -- Force Completion -- Retaking

Introduction

If you have a student who was forced out of a Bb Learn exam/test/quiz (hereafter, referred to as "exam") due to a technical issue, and if you have "Force Completion" enabled on the exam, then the student will need to start the exam from the beginning again. You can have the student only answer the questions they didn't already answer if you manually grade all parts of their second attempt/submission, including the auto-graded sections, and look at their first attempt/submission as well (more on this below), and it's recommended to do this if you immediately provide to students after they submit or with one-time view their score per question, the correct answers, the incorrect answers, or pre-set feedback (more on this below). If you allow multiple attempts/submissions on the exam, let us know (more on this below).

Please know that, if you have the timer feature enabled, the timer starts at zero again for the student on their second attempt/submission, but you can check the time taken by the student for each attempt (more on this below). If you do check the time taken by the student for each attempt, you may want to inform the student that they should only use the time remaining from their first attempt/submission to finish the exam.

There are 3 sets of instructions below and a "Final Notes" section.

Allowing a Student to Retake the Exam

You can allow the student to retake the exam by doing the following:

  1. Click "Grade Center."
  2. Click "Full Grade Center."
  3. Scroll right until you see the "Final Exam" column.
  4. Hover with your mouse over the cell in the "Final Exam" column and in the student's row, and click the circled down arrow that appears.
  5. "View Grade Details."
  6. Click "Ignore Attempt.:
  7. Click "OK" at any prompt that appears.
  8. The student should then be able to take the test. We recommend letting them know this.

Disabling "Force Completion" and Checking Feedback Options and Number of Allowed Attempts.

If you want to avoid this happening to this student again or any other student taking exam, change the options for the test so that you do not have "Force Completion" enabled. This will allow students to leave the test if they wish, but also they will not be kicked out of the test if they encounter technical issues. If you have a timer set on the exam, the timer will continue, even if they leave the test in this case. You should also check and modify feedback results.

To disable "Force Completion," check feedback options and number of attempts, do the following:

  1. Find the exam submission link that students click on in your course to take the exam.
  2. Hover with your mouse over the "FINAL EXAM" submission link and click the circled down arrow.
  3. Click "Edit the Test Options."
  4. Under "TEST AVAILABILITY," uncheck "Force Completion."
  5. Under "SHOW TEST RESULTS AND FEEDBACK TO STUDENTS", check and if necessary modify the options. More on these options can be found at this link in the "Feedback Options" section:
       (a) https://en-us.help.blackboard.com/Learn/Instructor/Tests_Pools_Surveys/030_Test_and_Survey_Options
       (b) If you allow "Multiple Attempts" on the exam (check the "TEST AVAILABILITY") area, let us know, but you will likely not want to provide the score per question, correct answers, incorrect answers, or feedback unless you set the test to show the feedback after the "Due Date," "After Availability End Date," or "After Attempts Are Graded" and the test is no longer available after the Due or "Availability End Date" as students can retake the test with information on what they got wrong.
  6. Scroll up or down and click "Submit."

Checking What Student Answered on First Attempt/Submission

The student won't see the answers they already submitted, but you can. And if you manually grade the student's exam, then the student will not need to re-answer the questions they finished answering with their first attempt/submission. You can just look at the student's two attempts/submissions, and grade the second attempt/submission.

You can see what questions the student answered with their first attempt/submission by doing the following:

  1. Click "Grade Center."
  2. Click "Full Grade Center."
  3. Scroll right until you see the exam column.
  4. Hover with your mouse over the cell in the exam column and in the student's row, and click the circled down arrow that appears.
  5. Click the "Attempt…" option with the circled exclamation point and grayed out circle next to it (assuming you ignored the first attempt as in the first set of instructions above).
  6. You'll see the student's answers in the "Given Answer" section for each question where the answer was saved.
  7. Click "Exit" to leave the page without making changes.

Final Notes

If you can't figure out how to grade the second attempt/submission, or have other questions, let me know. You can see how much time the student took on each attempt when you grade the exam by clicking the "Test Information" link towards the top but under the student's name on the "Grade Test" webpage when you manually grade an exam. If this is unclear to you, let us know.
